We believe the best gift is time. Our organizational model thrives on a gift-giving economy. The programs and publications we serve are made possible from the thousands of hours contributed by volunteers. We are flexible in how you want to work with us and we welcome contributions in person or remotely. Here are just a few opportunities for you to get involved.

Visual Brand Designer: Help us launch a rebrand

We are looking for help with our visual brand refresh. Our brand is well known among the scholarly community; now we want to expand to other though-driven audiences including those working in tech, new media art, and curatorial practice. This volunteer will help deliver program visuals to include print and digital templates, digital and print assets, CSS stylesheets, brand guidelines and tone. This will be a team-led project.

Timeframe: Open start–end of 2020
Location: Bay Area preferred but will consider remote
Skills needed: Adobe Creative Suite, basic design skills, understanding of print and/or digital graphic design deliverables

Google Adwords Creator: Help us drive traffic to our website

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we have received a Google Adwords grant to help drive traffic to our website. Using search display results and selective keywords, we are looking for help setting up effective campaigns. This is a great opportunity to learn and experiment with conversions and interesting campaign techniques.

Timeframe: Open, project-based
Location: Bay Area preferred but will consider remote
Skills needed: Google Adwords proficient

System and Data Migration Architect: Help us go from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0

Do flowcharts, archives, and search excite you? How can we migrate 50 years of content from our website and other buried treasures onto a collaborative CMS or file system that can be searchable and easily accessed by the great art/sci/tech community? We're open to your interest and skillset in this area. 

Hours per week: 5–10 hours
LocationBay Area preferred but will consider remote
Skills needed: Understanding of website development and systems architecture

Social Content and Graphics Creator 

Memes, GIFs, images, and quickly shared content is your specialty. We are seeking a volunteer who can mock up enticing graphics around the intersection of art and science, and the intersection of art and technology. These graphics are meant to be shared on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feeds. This is a great opportunity for someone who has a keen eye for art and an understanding of how social platforms work.

Timeframe: Open-ended
Hours per week: 5–10
Skills needed: Some photo editing, some vector editing, understanding of social tools
Location: Bay area preferred but will consider remote

Pitch Deck Designer

We are looking for designers to put together pitch decks to tell various stories about our organization from its foundings, what our current initiatives are, and what we are doing in the future.

Timeframe: Open
Location: Remote ok
Skills needed: Powerpoint, Adobe Suite

Digging Data? Help us visualize our network

Over 50 years of pioneers in art, science and technology have shaped the Leonardo community. This web of influence is ever growing. We are looking for a data visualization volunteer to design a visual map of the art, science, technology network. We are open to what software this can be built in. Perhaps something borrowed from d3? Or a whole new idea altogether. We're open to your interest and skill set in this area.

Leonardo Reviews Website and Data Archivist

We are looking for a data archive volunteer to work within the art, science, technology network. This important service entails helping Leonardo Reviews transfer archives of historic data from our old website onto our new website.  Good for people who want to brush up on their document and website skills.

Timeframe: Open, project-based
Location: Remote OK
Skills needed: Detail-oriented, experience with web publishing

Join the Leonardo Peer Review Panel

Leonardo journal, published for Leonardo/ISAST by MIT Press, has been considered the premier journal of record in the art/science/technology field for the past 50 years. In keeping with its scholarly focus, the journal editors submit manuscripts to peer review prior to acceptance. Authors are asked to revise their manuscripts to take into account reviewer recommendations, if the manuscript is favorably reviewed.

In working toward correcting an imbalance in diversity across our review panel, we explicitly seek BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) applicants as well as people of underrepresented/marginalized genders.
