Digital Ideas 2022 is Looking for Applications

Dates or Deadline:
29 January 2022 to 21 February 2022
Country:
United States

The Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan is excited to announce its second annual Digital IDEAS Summer Institute. Drawing on the acronym Inclusion-Diversity-Equity-Access-Success, each year’s program focuses on a new pressing issue at the intersection of technology and social justice. In 2021 we launched DISCO: The Digital Inquiry, Speculation, Collaboration, & Optimism Network, and in 2022 we will explore the Critical Access movement and the relationships between technology and disability justice.

Presented entirely online, over the course of eight days (spread comfortably across two weeks, from July 11-22, 2022), cohort members will participate in keynote lectures, panels, methodologies workshops, and group discussions. As always, Digital IDEAS seeks to explore the ways that the digital perpetuates existing inequalities and envision a new anti-ableist, anti-racist, intersectionally inclusive future through a nuanced speculative, experimental, and critical lens. This online summer institute will provide critical digital studies training and support collaborative projects that center on anti-ableist, anti-racist, feminist, LGBTQ-affirming, and practices.

Eligibility:

Digital IDEAS is open to advanced graduate students, post-docs, alt-ac staff, and early-career faculty (NTT and TT) at academic institutions as well as artists, technologists, and community activists/advocates who feel their work is a good match.

Cost of attendance:

Participation in Digital IDEAS 2022 is subsidized by the University of Michigan and generously supported by the Mellon Foundation-sponsored DISCO Network.

This year’s cost of attendance is:

  • $1,000 for faculty or staff members at universities or other organizations
  • $550 for graduate students or those without institutional affiliation.

Fee waivers and scholarships are available. Financial need is not considered in the admissions process and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Accessibility:

We plan to use Zoom as our video conferencing platform will have real-time captioning (CART) provided for all sessions. When applying, participants can also share additional access needs and communication preferences.
