Barbara H. Berrie, Washington, DC. Chemist. Berrie is head of scientific research at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. She is involved in the study of the materials and methods of artists and analysis of materials in works of art in order to understand the artist’s original intention, and to address issues of authenticity and preservation. Her publications cover a wide swath of conservation science: on artists’ techniques, on the identification of colorants, the chemical reactions within artworks and on their preservation and treatment using soft matter. She has a predilection for art by the Venetian cinquecento colorists. Berrie is the editor of volume 4 of Artists’ Pigments. She received her BSc with honors in Chemistry from St. Andrews University, Scotland and her PhD from Georgetown University. Berrie was awarded a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Naval Research Laboratory.
