  • Borges da Silva, Cândida "Egberto Gismonti' Pianism and interpretation in his work "Sonhos de Recife"." PhD , Plymouth University, 2005
Keywords/Fields of Study : pianism; piano interpretation; egberto gismonti; frevo; brazilian music

Abstract: With the aim of finding subsidies for the understanding of the musical and performatic aspects on Egberto Gismonti’s interpretation and pianism, an investigation was developed in his music "Sonhos de Recife". This piece is the only one in his repertoire which has a score entirely written by him up to the present and which presents pianistic elements relevant to this research. From the analysis of the referred score, we presented interpretative possibilities which served as parameter for discussing about Gismonti’s technical-interpretative choices observed in the recording of the show carried out in 2003, in the theater Colón, Argentine. We made a parallel between the observation of his pianism and interpretation with some declarations given by him, during five interviews, about his career and practice. His work is practically unknown in the academic group. Egberto Gismonti (1947-) is a contemporary Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and composer, whose pianism has as main characteristics the great virtuosity, wealth of sounds, rhythmic independence and corporal integration. His interpretation is distinguished by the strong sense of rhythm and creativity, especially by the ability to improvise and develop polyphonies. His production shows unique compositions and practice, which reflect his philosophical concepts, his experience and personality.
