Abstract: This thesis examines the origins and cultural context of cell phone novels, first in Japan then spreading to other countries, and considers the literary value of emerging forms of digital fiction. It includes reviews of a sampling of novels written and read on networked digital devices through social media and explores trends in the academic and publishing communities that point to the relevance of this phenomenon to young writers as well as to adult writers for children and young adults.
