Samuel Beilby is an early career contemporary artist based in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia). The majority of his work is produced on Whadjuk Noongar boodja. Samuel pays his respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledges their continuing sovereignty, culture and law. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
Samuel’s practice and research interests address the sentience, ephemerality and turbulent nature of contemporary digital and mechanical new media technologies, materialism and labour. Through theoretical research, speculative narratives and performative installations, his projects often operate to amplify tensions between late-capitalist endeavours and geological and/or biological systems. He currently occupies a committee member role at Cool Change Contemporary and a casual teaching position at the University of Western Australia’s School of Design’ Fine Arts Department. Recently Samuel has exhibited, given artist talks and done performances in Australia, Taiwan, France and Japan.
