Tales from Humble Creatures: as told by an artist and a biologist
SPEAKERS
Trevor Yeung, artist
King L. Chow, professor
Division of Life Science & Interdisciplinary Programs Office, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Beauty is often associated with variations and changes that result in novelty and diversity. Biological diversity is derived from constant accumulation of changes, facilitated by mutations (errors) and more effectively orchestrated by random exchanges of genetic material through sexual reproduction. Delving into the underlying principles of this process, biologist King L. Chow will reveal how simple mechanisms running on simple rules create a myriad of wonders in the living world, each thriving in its own right. Artist Trevor Yeung will share how plants become a medium for some of his artworks, focusing on personal observations and thinking processes behind the metaphors.
