Reframing AI Through Art, Design, and Cross-Cultural Imagination
From Artificial Intelligence to Augmented Wisdom is a joint print and digital collaboration between Leonardo Journal and ZHUANGSHI. The issue examines how artificial intelligence can function not only as a technical instrument but also as a collaborator in processes of creativity, ethics, cultural imagination, and collective futures.
At a moment when AI saturates global discourse, this issue asks:
- What forms of wisdom emerge when artists, designers, technologists, and humanists critically and creatively engage AI?
- Whose values, worldviews, and cultural frameworks are embedded in these systems?
- How might cross-cultural dialogue expand the possibilities of technological meaning-making?
An Experimental Approach to Publishing
This special issue also serves as an experiment in publication design. It is presented as a hybrid, evolving platform in which texts, images, and interactive components operate together. The site includes a conversational AI companion, a generated image gallery, and bilingual content.
Through this structure, the issue tests a core proposition: rethinking tools requires rethinking formats, authorship, and the circulation of knowledge.
Accordingly, From Artificial Intelligence to Augmented Wisdom is both a publication about AI and one shaped through experimental engagements with AI, design, and collective editorial practice.
About the Images
For this issue’s images, we explored how language, cultural context, and AI training data shape machine-generated representations of the same ideas. We fed each article’s English and Simplified Chinese abstracts into DeepSeek to generate paired image prompts, then asked Midjourney to visualize those prompts.
Placed together, these bilingual prompts and resulting images reveal how AI systems interpret identical concepts differently depending on linguistic and cultural inputs—a contemporary telephone game for the algorithmic age.
Why This Issue, and Why Now
As AI systems proliferate—from generative models to algorithmic infrastructures—public discourse often narrows to questions of efficiency, scale, and disruption. Leonardo and ZHUANGSHI approach this moment from a different vantage point.
Both journals have longstanding commitments to examining how tools shape creative practice and cultural understanding. This issue continues that tradition by asking not only what AI can do but what AI should do, and how humans might engage such systems with care, depth, and responsibility.
By linking design and art communities across linguistic and cultural contexts, the issue underscores that the future of AI is necessarily plural and best approached through shared inquiry.
