Los Angeles-based artist SE Barnet makes films, videos,
installations and new media works that play with the discrepancy
between the actual and the expected. Her internationally exhibited
work focuses on process, incorporating an approach that often
embraces error and incongruity. She is engaged in exploring the
interrelationship between technology and the construction of
identity. Barnet's work has been exhibited at The Museum of
Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The American Academy in Rome,
Galerie Christine Koenig in Vienna, in de een minuten as part of the
Sandberg Instituut and Nederlands Instituut voor Media Kunst
Montevideo, and at the Gazon Rouge Gallery in Athens. She has also
contributed illustrations and writing to three projects published by
Verse Chorus Press. Her work has been included in Art in America,
Art Forum, and Art Papers, as well as Horizon
Zero, the on-line Banff new media journal
<www.horizonzero.ca>, with an essay by Sylvie Parent, the Green
Museum <moisture.greenmuseum.org/> and Media@terra
microMuseum. Barnet has received various grants and awards, including
a Durfee ARC grant, the Long Beach Museum of Art's 1999 New Vision's
Video Production Grant, the Panavision Young Filmmakers Award and, as
part of the MOISTURE collective, a LEF Arts Foundation grant and a
Beall Center for the Arts grant. Barnet heads the video department
for Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design, where she is an
associate professor. Video stills of Barnet's work can be viewed at
