Roy R. Behrens teaches graphic design and design history at the University
of Northern Iowa. He is founding editor of Ballast Quarterly Review,
an advisory board member for Gestalt Theory, and, until recently, was
art director of the North American Review, and contributing editor of
Print. In the past 35 years, he has published several hundred articles,
and a number of books, most recently False Colors: Art, Design and Modern
Camouflage (2002) and Cook Book: Gertrude Stein, William Cook and Le
Corbusier (2005). He has appeared in interviews on NOVA (PBS television),
Equinox (BBC television), BBC Radio and other media. A recipient of
the McKay Award for Outstanding Research and the Iowa Regents Award
for Faculty Excellence, and a nominee for the Smithsonian Institution's
National Design Awards, he has been described by Communication Arts
magazine as "one of the most original thinkers in design."
In 2007, he designed a major book about the Bauhaus ceramic tradition,
titled Marguerite Wildenhain and the Bauhaus: An International Anthology,
edited by Dean and Geraldine Schwarz, and is working on a book about
American artist and psychologist Adelbert Ames II. Information and examples
