Wayne Vitale is a composer, performer, author, recording engineer, and instrument conservator who has long been inspired by the music of Bali, Indonesia. He has collaborated with many of Bali's finest musicians and gamelan ensembles, leading projects that bring them together with US-based artists and audiences. He is a founding performer and past director of the fifty-member California-based group Gamelan Sekar Jaya; a composer in the LIghtbulb Ensemble, working at the interface of Balinese and Western music traditions; and owner of VITAL RECORDS (www.vitalrecords.ws), a record label focused on new and traditional gamelan music. He has also devoted himself to the metallic art of gamelan tuning, and has written articles analyzing Balinese tuning systems in journals such as Analytical Approaches to World Music.For his day job, he is Senior Grant Writer and Content Specialist at the SF-based social justice organization, Asian Law Caucus.
