Pedro Alves da Veiga is an artist and researcher who was awarded a PhD in Digital Media Art jointly by the University of Algarve and Aberta University in Portugal. He is currently a professor and sub-director of the PhD programme in Digital Media Art at Aberta University. Before embarking on an academic career, he spent over two decades as an entrepreneur, developing award-winning web design and multimedia projects.
He is a member of CIAC's scientific council (the Research Centre in Arts and Communication). His work regularly bridges the fields of art, science, and technology. His research focuses on the impact of attention and experience economies on new media art ecosystems, the use and development of art-based research methodologies, and topics such as hacktivism, artivism and new media curatorship.
In his artistic practice, he explores generative art, interactive systems, creative programming, assemblage and digital audiovisuals. His works investigate the depiction of facts, situations, ideals, and interventions. These themes are best expressed through media art, which demands and disrupts the viewer's attention. By combining aesthetics and technology, Veiga’s pieces encourage interaction and engagement with the audience, enabling viewers to interpret and create their own narratives. His pieces have been exhibited internationally in countries including Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, China, Singapore, Thailand and the USA.
