Antonio Labella holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Málaga and is pursuing an M.A. in Art and Creation Research at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid. His primary research interests explore the ecosystem of contemporary global art creation and the figure of the 21st-century spectator, examining these topics from both theoretical research and artistic creation perspectives.
He defended his doctoral dissertation, titled Global Contemporaneity in Art Biennials (2007-2019): A Study of the Biennial Network and the Conceptual and Formal Interests of Artists and Curators, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid, in September 2021. Building on this research, he has published several articles, including "The Art Biennial Exhibition Format Under Study: Analysis of the Global Network of Art Biennials Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic (2007-2019)" in ASRI journal, and "Heterochronicity, Chronos in Debate" in Artnodes journal.
He has participated in the research project Big Data: Organizational Aspects (Open Data) and Development of New Creative Capabilities (Visual Cartographies, Geolocation, and Wearables) and is currently part of the research team for Data Art Research: Theories, Methods, and Practices. Both projects are based at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid. Currently, he is conducting a research residency on the figure of the artist-creator and their relationship with digital networks, as part of the Margarita Salas program at the Department of Art History, University of Málaga.
Since 2003, he has worked as a visual artist and art curator, participating in exhibitions at international art fairs like Estampa 2011 and in private art galleries such as Pedro Peña Art Gallery (Marbella) and Galería Seis más Uno (Madrid), as well as public and private institutions like Fundación Maradiaga (Seville) and La Casa del Lector (Madrid). He has authored curatorial texts for catalogs, including Between the Lines, edited by the Museu d'Art Modern de la Diputació de Tarragona.
He has presented peer-reviewed papers at several international conferences, with their communications published in the respective proceedings.
