Catherine Herrera
Catherine Herrera is a filmmaker, installation artist, and photographer whose Martins Beach Project was selected for a 2023-2024 Creative Corp Fellowship with 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica and a 2023 Unlock Her Potential Mentorship in Documentary Filmmaking in support of her documentary film, Martins Beach, and creating California Coastal Stories, a StoryMap charting the contributions, histories and stewardship of BIPOC Californians and Allies that broaden the story of the California Coast, and point to successful climate change solutions rooted in Native science in collaboration with modern experimentation to find scalable answers to restoring and making sustainable coastal life. Her films, installations and photography have exhibited at the de Young Museum, San Francisco, SF Art Institute, U.C.Berkeley, Montalvo Arts Center, de Saisset Museum & Gallery, Triton Contemporary Arts Museum, MACLA, Mission Cultural Center, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, La Panaderia, Mexico City, Ex Convento, Mexico City. Catherine became disabled at age 43 after a needle aspiration injury to her major right arm nerve, that traveled to her spine and impacted her mobility and provoked a rare condition. Art, and grounding in the coastal spaces where she grew up, helped heal the shock of such a drastic life change, and to reimagine her art practice.
