Erika Jean’s practice connects disability arts with new media arts. She mixes the processes of creative making with assistive technologies to confront the idea that agency is only a human trait, and that authorship lies solely with the individual. Her artworks challenge conventional forms of artistic expression, to create alternative modes of engagement and interaction that are inclusive and push the boundaries of how art, communication, and bodies can be understood.
Her interdisciplinary approach extends beyond the gallery, where she has collaborated with neuroscientists, software engineers, and disability arts activists. In her residencies, she has co-facilitated seminars that encourage discussions between technology, neurodiversity, and art, creating spaces for collective learning and advocacy.
Erika Jean’s artworks have been exhibited and featured at international venues such as The Hole NYC, Science Gallery Ireland, Boston Cyberarts Gallery in the USA, Bauhaus-Archiv in Germany, and national venues such as Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq and Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec in Canada. She has a BFA and BA from University of Manitoba.
