Claudia Martinho is a practice-based researcher based in Gerês, Portugal. She is an architect (FAUP, PT), holding a PhD in Music - Sonic Arts (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK), and a MSc degree in Architectural and Urban Acoustics (Sorbonne Université/IRCAM, FR). Her work embraces architecture, sound art, acoustic ecology, bioacoustics and archaeoacoustics. She experiments with environmental sound through a spatial approach, into the architectural design of ambiances, as encounters between humans, non-humans and phenomena. Her practice is site-specific and involves field recording, soundscape design, installation, performance and workshops.
Claudia's projects open up potentials of sites and result in a diversity of experiences of environmental sound, enhanced by acoustic spatialisation. She creates resonant soundscapes to transform the ambiance dynamics of a site and affect multi-sensory variations. This is a way to engage ecological awareness of surrounding vital forces and symbiotic processes, which are usually neglected by the human being.
Claudia has presented works in events such as ‘Noite Branca Braga’, gnration (Braga, PT) ‘Invisible Places: Sound, Urbanism and Sense of Place’ symposium (Azores, PT), ‘Lisboa Soa – sound art, urbanism and auditory culture’ (Lisbon, PT), ‘Archaeoacoustics III International Conference’ (Tomar, PT), ‘Architectones: Sound, Art and Architecture Seminar’ (Arc-Et-Sénans, FR), ‘Tuned City – between sound and space speculations’ (Berlin, DE). She has been involved in multiple collaborative projects. Among others, she was co-editor of the publication ‘Site of Sound: of Architecture and the Ear – Vol. 2’, co-curator of ‘evento – public art and urban interventions’, Biennale of Bordeaux, France, and collaborator with Bureau des Mesarchitectures, Paris, France. She is currently art director of the cultural association Rural Vivo, based in UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Gerês, and coordinator of the Architecture 3000 Research Network / Educatiooon 3000.
