Ian Winters is a media, video and performance artist who often collaborates with acclaimed composers, directors, and choreographers to create both staged and open-ended visual and media environments both as site-specific works and for stage.  He has received commissions from EMPAC, Rainin Foundation, The Lumiere Festival and the Creative Work Fund, and residency awards from Leonardo at Djerassi Art Science program, Djerassi Resident Artist Program, and Atlantic Center for the Arts. Major recent works include 2021’s A Telling of the Light (2021 collaboration with Elaine Buckholtz) for the UK Lumiere Festival, 2020’s TIDES: San Francisco Bay which premiered at Minnesota St Project in San Francisco, and 2019 site-specific film Summer, Winter, Spring.
As a visual and media designer he has worked contemporary music and ensembles world-wide such as the Paris Opera, SF Opera / Merola, Kennedy Center, The Barbican, Lincoln Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts among many others.  Collaborators include opera director Netia Jones, Robert Moses, Brenda Way/ODC, Francis Ford Coppola, Evelyn Ficarra, Mary Armentrout, Pamela Z, Myra Melford, and many other US based artists.
He maintains an active worldwide teaching practice leading workshops in live media and the integration of sensors, physical performance and site-based pieces. Talks and publications include ISEA, Leonardo Journal, LASER series. He studied video and performance at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts & Tufts University, followed by training in dance / physical theater and architecture.
Service activities include roles as the co-curator of Richmond, California’s MilkBar with Mary Armentrout, as well as a visiting research fellow at the University of Sussex. He is also a a noted leader and advocate for the transformation of housing and economic systems through more than 2 decades of leadership service in the Community Land Trust movement advocating for climate equitable solutions for housing and community capital.
