Nan Li is an assistant professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research centers on the visual aspect of science communication. This line of research examines the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impacts of the iconic representations of emerging sciences, such as the spiky fuzz-ball image of coronavirus, on lay audiences. Most recently, she investigates the potential effectiveness of using various forms of visual art (e.g., fine art, comic art, artistic data visualizations etc.) in making science more relatable and accessible for diverse audiences, especially the traditionally underserved groups, such as racial minorities.
