Focus area: Sound, Acoustics, AI (Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Deep Fakes), Computer Science, Engineering, Generative Practices, Generative Art

James McDermott works on generative music and art. His main focus is on interactive evolutionary search as an alternative workflow for creative work, and on using neural networks and program synthesis to achieve representations which are highly suitable for evolutionary search. His PhD was in evolutionary sound synthesis (University of Limerick) and his post-doctoral research was in generative design and music (University College Dublin and Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He was co-chair of EvoMUSART 2013 & 2014. He has published ~80 peer-reviewed papers with 1000+ citations and h-index 18 (Google Scholar https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=nKNOv8oAAAAJ). He is an Associate Professor in University College Dublin.
