We are excited to start our 2023 LASER series with a talk and art experience by artist/engineer Patrick Lysaght entitled “Come closer. Look deeper: The Art & Science of Fluid Flow & Crystal Growth”. Lysaght captures lyrical portraits of entropy, the paradox of exquisite structure spontaneously emerging in our world of increasing randomness and disorder. This LASER will take place at his new gallery, Entropy, where the audience will be able to see exquisite large format images of the fluid flow and crystal growth concepts described in the interactive lecture This talk is presented in coordination with Leonardo / ISAST (International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology) with support from the University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts. \

About Patrick Lysaght

“I’m interested in transitions - how structure forms as things change which underscores the notion of entropy and the subtle progression of time.” – Patrick Lysaght

As Program Manager for Physical Characterization of nanoelectronic devices at SEMATECH, the consortium of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, Lysaght used the most advanced techniques in the world to measure the atomic bonding structure in novel materials only a few atoms thick. Amazingly, we don’t need synchrotrons and electron microscopes to witness the onset of crystallization - how structure forms and builds on itself.

In 2022, Lysaght published an art book that morphed into FLEETING STRUCTURE: a 50-minute documentary produced amid covid isolation and dangerous misinformation promoted in the United States and elsewhere. The film is a beautiful and fascinating look at the structure of fluid flow and crystal growth, two areas where nature really shows off. Fleeting Structure has won laurels at film festivals around the globe for photography, cinematography, sound, and editing in categories of best educational, inspirational, environmental, experimental, and science film. It is personal and universal - opinionated and factual. The original soundtrack is intimate and lowdown, adding rhythmic urgency to waning truth in contemporary society.
