The NY LASER program is a series of lectures and presentations on art, science, and technology-related projects. The program is an affiliate of the Leonardo/International Society for the Arts, Science and Technology (ISAST) and the Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF). Former LEAF Chairs, Ellen K. Levy, PhD, artist, writer, and co-editor of the "Science and the Arts since 1750" Routledge Press book series, and Patricia Olynyk, Florence and Frank Bush Professor of Art at Washington University and Inaugural Medicine + Media Arts Fellow at UCLA co-direct the NY LASER program to foster high-level dialogue on topics of leading interest to our network of artists, scientists, humanists, scholars, and historians. Our April 22 event will feature three speakers: Nina Czegledy, Ellen K. Levy, Charissa N. Terranova.

Nina Czegledy is an artist, independent curator, and researcher who works at the intersection of art, science and technology. She is affiliated with several academic institutions and collaborates on a broad range of international projects. She is a member of Leonardo/ISAST, LASER Chairs & Post Pandemic Provocateurs. Her presentation will reflect on notions of the center versus the periphery and the dynamics between the two. The Center is typically defined as a principal point where all attention is focused while the Periphery is assumed to be on the edge where an ongoing craving is observed towards the Center. Czegledy will elaborate on the Center and the Periphery and how the architecture of public space has shifted provocatively in the COVID-19 Pandemic situation.

Ellen K. Levy, former president of the College Art Association, has exhibited her art nationally, at venues that include NASA, and internationally. She has also published widely on the relationship between art and complex systems. After earning her doctorate in art and neuroscience in 2012 from the University of Plymouth, UK, she was Special Advisor in the Arts and Sciences at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. With Patricia Olynyk, she has directed the NY LASER program for over a decade. Her talk will explore her engagement with the anthology she coedited and contributed to, D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson’s Generative Influences in Art, Design, and Architecture: From Forces to Form and some of the implications of what Evelyn Fox Keller designated a "new consciousness of the potentialities lying latent in the scientific project." Levy will focus on the ways in which art can reflect these potentialities and manifest life's laterally induced web of interdependencies.

Charissa N. Terranova is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she lectures and teaches seminars on contemporary art, modern architecture, the history of the avant-garde, the history of biology in art, and biological complex systems in art. She is most recently the coeditor with Ellen K. Levy of the anthology D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson’s Generative Influences in Art, Design, and Architecture: From Forces to Form (March 2021). She is coediting with Meredith Tromble the book series Biotechne: Interthinking Art, Science, and Design at Bloomsbury Press in the History and Theory of Art section. Her talk will cast the aesthetic concepts of autonomy and agency through the lens of “autopoiesis,” which means “self-creation” in the work of Charles Darwin and contemporary art-and-biology. The concepts of autonomy and agency have traditionally ignored the vast and diverse world of nonhuman life, re-inscribing anthropocentric biases and hierarchies of life, such as the Great Chain of Being, even while in the best instances claiming to topple such hegemonic systems of order. This talk serves to correct these problems within the philosophy and practice of art by dwelling upon pluralist thinking within recent and past scientific thought.
