The L.A. premiere of “György Kepes: Interthinking Art + Science” is a part of the Getty initiative PST ART: Art & Science Collide at ArtCenter College of Design. It is hosted by LASER Talks partners Williamson Gallery, Art Center College of Design, and Fulcrum Arts.
The mesmerizing narrative of new-media art’s history across the 20th century is vividly portrayed on the cinema screen through the animated life of the painter, photographer, designer, writer, and polymath György Kepes, a shapeshifter of modernism and the man who coined the phrase “visual culture.”
A prominent figure in the mid-20th-century art and design scene, Kepes (1906–2001) was a pivotal contributor to the international development of art and design theory and the application of design principles in various fields. As the architect of the Light Workshop at the New Bauhaus/School of Design in Chicago in 1937 and as the founder and first director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at MIT in 1967, Kepes’ enterprise was to fill the gap between the humanities and the sciences.
Dr. Márton Orosz serves as the founder and Curator of the Collection of Photography and Media Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts – Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest. Since 2014, he has held the position of Director at the museum dedicated to Victor Vasarely, which is part of the same institution. Dr. Orosz also holds the role of scientific advisor to the Kepes Institute in Eger and the Michèle Vasarely Foundation in Puerto Rico. He has curated numerous exhibitions across the globe, written books and articles on various art-related subjects, and delivered lectures in several locations, including Europe, the United States, and Asia. His research and publications encompass a wide range of fields, including light-based media, photography, avant-garde collecting, abstract geometric and kinetic art, computer art, motion picture, and animated film. His first documentary film, titled György Kepes – Interthinking Art + Science was completed in 2023 and has garnered recognition and accolades at many international film festivals.
Ramone Muñoz holds a BFA in Advertising and MFA in Fine Art from ArtCenter College of Dessign. Early in his career he established Ramone C. Munoz Design Associates, which handled the design and communications needs of a variety of accounts including Atlantic Richfield Company, alternative energy division; The Los Angeles Music Center annual reports; and Mitsubishi Motor Corp. of America, U.S. identity program. He is currently an adjunct full professor at ArtCenter in the Graphic Design and Humanities and Sciences departments where he has taught since 1984. He served as associate chair of the Graphics Dept. from 1986 to 1990 and chair of the Foundation Studies Program from 1990 to 2000. He helped create the first Graphics Graduate program in 1990. Muñoz, an active artist living in Los Angeles, exhibits his art internationally. He has served as a grants panelist for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
