“What is required is a new interdisciplinary field capable of fully theorizing this area, one that recognizes artists as contributors to the scientific project, advances new methods of work, and renews the STS commitment to analyze all forms of knowledge. The development of art-focused STS, or Art, Science and Technology Studies (ASTS), is a response to this demand. With roots in STS and critical theory, ASTS applies hybrid tools to investigating art-science collaborations and instances where art or science interact and intersect with each other.” (Hannah Rogers, Art, Science and the Politics of Knowledge, MIT Press 2022, p. xxiv)

Keywords: archival practice, boundary object, transdisciplinary practices, cultures of media art, boundary disciplines, ASTS

The session will be arranged as a conversation with local practitioners based on short (5 mins) presentations by the four panelists.

This LASER Event will feature topics on:

  1. Collection / archive as a boundary object across disciplines and networks (fostering transdisciplinary communities of practice)
  2. Practices situated in an uneasy borderline between art, science, technology, design, storytelling, and the ritual/spiritual (i.e. the case Patricia Cadavid https://www.patriciacadavid.net/search/label/ProjectsMain)
  3. ASTS, critical theory, and the question of the future of humanities…
  4. Technologies as boundary tools

Her projects call for the development of empathetic strategies aimed at recognising other (non-human) species. In her analysis of the Anthropocene and its theoretical framework, the artist uses the terms “aquatocene” and “aquaforming” to refer to the human impact on aquatic environments. Her works received awards and nominations at Prix Ars Electronica, Starts Prize, Falling Walls.

HC Gilje has moved between installation, experimental video, live performance and set design since he graduated from the intermedia department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim in 1999. He got a kickstart to his career with a one year residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin 2000-2001. Being a key figure in the live cinema scene from around 2000 (with 242.pilots and various other constellations) Gilje toured extensively throughout the world, while at the same time creating experimental videos presented at various film, art and festival venues. Some of the videos were also released on DVD (242.pilots live in Bruxelles on NYC label Carpark and HC Gilje Cityscapes released on Paris label lowave). Gilje was also quite active in theater and dance, mainly through his many-year collaboration with choreographer Eva Cecilie Richardsen. Together they established Kreutzerkompani with a yearly production from 2000 to 2006. In 2006 Gilje changed direction, taking elements from his earlier practice (exploration of physical spaces in his videos, creation of spaces in his stage work and improvisation from his live work) into a longer term project he has called Conversations with Spaces. This project explores, mainly through large-scale installations, perception of change and transformation in the meeting between the ephemeral media of light, projection, sound and motion with physical structures. These projects have been shown in traditional gallery spaces, outdoors and in more unconventional settings. The documentation of the Conversations with spaces project was published by uten tittel in 2017. Gilje still occasionally performs live, mainly in his collaborations with Maja Ratkje and Justin Bennett, and still creates projection and set design for theatre and dance.

Anna Nacher is an associate professor at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland; Vice Editor-in-Chief for Arts & Cultural Studies Review (Przegl Kulturoznawczy); and the 2019 Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence in Creative Digital Media program at Winona State University (USA). Her research interests include media art, electronic literature, media theory and environmental humanities. She is currently pursuing a 3-year long research project on the post-digital imagery grant from Polish National Science Centre (entitled, The aesthetics of post-digital imagery: between new materialism and object-oriented philosophy). The author of three books in Polish; the newest one published in 2016 focuses on a locative media imagery. A reworked version of one chapter has appeared as “Internet of things and automation of imaging: beyond representationalism” in communication+1, vol. 5 (2016). She has published numerous articles in journals and chapters in edited volumes including Hyperrhiz, Electronic Book Review, communication+1. The most recent publication: VR – the culture of (non)participation? “Reframing the participative edge of virtual reality” in Cultures of participation: Arts, Digital Media and Cultural Institutions: Eriksson B., Stage C., Valtysson B. (eds.) (Routledge 2019). She is also a part-time musician and a passionate gardener in a tiny permaculture farm located in Slovakian Carpathians.
