Join us Wednesday, April 21, 5:00 - 6:00 pm (AZ time, find your time zone here) for a Future IDs conversation with the ASU Leonardo LASER series featuring Gregory Sale, Dr. Luis Garcia, Rebecca Jackson, Emiliano Lopez, and Dr. Jacquelyn McCroskey.

Register on ZOOM

Their conversation brings together a lead artist, three project collaborators, and a professor of social work to discuss a socially engaged art project, Future IDs at Alcatraz (2018-2019), and explore the intersectionality of and distinctions between art and social work.

Specifically, Future IDs expressed the collective power of rescripting identity, representation, and narrative during and after incarceration. By involving individuals with conviction histories in its inception, development, and presentation, the project promoted self-determination and modeled strategies for centering those most negatively impacted by social systems. The project softened conventional boundaries between artist, participant, and audience, allowing for mutual learning and identification that could undo the social othering and cultural biases that often stigmatize individuals and communities. Moreover, as a symbolic gesture, Future IDs at Alcatraz engaged the layered history of America’s most infamous prison-turned-national-park to host critical, civic deliberations.
