A Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) Rendezvous Event.

Program:

NY LASER is a series of lectures and presentations on art and science projects, in support of Leonardo/ISAST’s LEAF initiative (Leonardo Education and Art Forum).  Former LEAF Chairs, Ellen K. Levy, former IDSVA Special Advisor in the Arts and Sciences and Patricia Olynyk, Director, Graduate School of Art, Washington University co-direct these presentations to promote dialogue at the highest level among artists, scientists, scholars, and historians. Space is limited, so please rsvp by sending an email to levy@nyc.rr.com or olynyk@wustl.edu. There will be feature presentations by Daniel Hill, Madeline Schwartzman, and Allan Wexler.

Speakers:

Daniel Hill is a painter, sound artist, curator, writer, and educator, whose work explores the relationship between visual art, sound, and science. He recently curated “Visual Inquiries: Artists Inspired by Science” at Pace University and co-curated a traveling exhibition “Emergence and Structure” at Lafayette College and the University of Florida. His work is widely collected and recent exhibitions include: Brattleboro Museum of Art, Holland Tunnel Gallery- Greece, Margret Thatcher Projects, and McKenzie Fine Art. Daniel will discuss process and systems as inquiry within his practice, which explores the relationship between vision and sound and the power of this connection to generate compelling visual environments. Daniel will also address the methodology of science as a basis for the conceptual underpinning of his works.

Madeline Schwartzman is the curator of See Yourself E(x)ist, an art and science exhibition currently on view at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery. She is the author of See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception, a book about the future of the human sensorium, and the forthcoming See Yourself X: Human Futures Expanded, a book about the future of the human head. Schwartzman teaches at Barnard College and Parsons, writes books, hunts for poems on the subway, and makes films, videos and installations. Schwartzman will present several book projects that focus on three ways in which to see our human future. These include: the future of humans and animals; the future of the human head; and the body and the senses, with their many complexities and transformations.

Allan Wexler works in the fields of architecture, design, and art. He is represented by the Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York City and has exhibited, taught, and lectured internationally. The subject of Wexler’s work is the built environment. His drawings, multimedia objects, images, and installations, alter perceptions of domestic activities. He investigates eating, bathing, sitting, and socializing, turning these everyday activities into ritual and theater. In the late1960’s he was an early member of the group of architects and artists, who called themselves “non-architects” or “paper architects,” and questioned the perceived divide between art and the design disciplines. His presentation: Absurd Thinking: Between Art and Design will address the use of the Scientific Method to break through preconceptions.
