FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Leonardo and Tsinghua's ZHUANGSHI Journal Launch Groundbreaking Issue on AI and Augmented Wisdom
OAKLAND, CA & BEIJING, CHINA – [January 15, 2026] – Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST), in a landmark partnership with Tsinghua University's ZHUANGSHI Journal, today announced the release of a special issue, "From Artificial Intelligence to Augmented Wisdom." This unique, bilingual (English and Mandarin) collaboration brings together leading artists, scientists, designers, and philosophers to forge a new, humanistic vision for the future of creativity.
In an era of rapid technological change and geopolitical complexity, this publication fosters a crucial dialogue between Western and Eastern perspectives on artificial intelligence. The issue moves beyond dystopian fears and utopian hype to investigate a more nuanced, collaborative future. Contributors tackle pressing questions: How can AI serve as a tool for deeper cultural understanding? What are the ethics of co-creating with non-human intelligence? And how can cross-cultural collaboration shape a wiser, more equitable technological world?
"This special issue is a testament to the power of scholarly and artistic exchange to build bridges," said Diana Ayton-Shenker, Executive Director of Leonardo/ISAST. "In a time of increasing polarization, creating shared spaces for inquiry is an act of hope. By bringing these diverse voices together, we are not just discussing the future of AI; we are actively modeling a more collaborative and thoughtful way to build it."
The collaboration with ZHUANGSHI, China's premier journal of art and design based at the prestigious Tsinghua University, provides an unprecedented platform for this global dialogue. "While sailing on the winds of technology,” stated Professor Fang Xiaofeng, Editor-in-Chief of ZHUANGSHI, “we must, with even greater urgency, deeply understand humanity and human nature, ensuring that artificial intelligence does not subsume human intelligence."
Highlights from the issue include:
- A case-study on facilitating compassion through animal-human-AI interactions by creative technologist Alinta Krauth.
- A drone- and AI-powered search for the last surviving female of a near-extinct cycad species by research-led artist Laura Cinti et al.
- A mechanism that synthesizes AI and hippocampal networks to counter virtual disembodiment by MIT scholar Joshua Sariñana.
- An interview exploring boundaries of design, science, and AI through the lens of “morphing matter” with lab director Lining Yao.
- A critical essay on the place of generative AI in the context of recent technological advancement by digital culture theorist Lev Manovich.
