James D. Trolinger is a physicist, artist, teacher, and holographic art critic. He began painting in oils at the age of seven, and though his profession is science, he never stopped making and loving art. He received a Ph.D in physics at the University of Tennessee, specializing in coherent optics and holography, where he was also a professor before entering the commercial arena. Although his career in holography is technical in nature, he works in various media including oils, pastels, watercolor and art holography.

He has founded two successful laser applications companies including MetroLaser Incorporated (www.metrolaserinc.com) where he is technical director. He has studied in various California art schools and under various masters (e.g. Corrine Houston, Tim Clark, Jane Bauman, and Lyn Torrini). He currently teaches a course “Introduction to Holography-Art and Science” in a local college.

Dividing time between art and science, he directs and teaches applications of holography and lasers, critiques holographic art, paints “en plein air” in many different countries, and offers his art free of charge to those who donate to cancer research. “I believe that artists have the ability to call attention to beauty and meaning that is often missed by the casual observer and impossible to capture in photographs. My goal in painting is to create a record of beauty and meaning.” His art, which can be seen at www.worldsworsttourist.com/art/index.htm , resides in collections around the world.
