Joseph Squier is a Professor in the School of Art & Design at the University of Illinois, where he co-founded the New Media Program. He received a B.S. in psychology from the University of Illinois, and an M.F.A. in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. Squier's World Wide Web art site, The Place, received critical praise both in the United States and abroad, and is permanently housed in the new media collection at the Walker Art Center. It has been featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Wired magazine, and Print magazine. Squier has shown his electronic work at numerous international venues, including Paris, Berlin, Zurich, London, New York, Buenos Aires, and Johannesburg.
In 2004, Squier co-founded the visual/literary culture magazine Ninth Letter and ninthletter.com, a showcase for new electronic narrative genres. In 2006 the Modern Language Association designated Ninth Letter as the best new literary journal. Both the magazine and the website continue to garner awards for both content and design.
At the University of Illinois, Squier has been recognized as a University Scholar and a Distinguished Teacher/Scholar, two of the highest distinctions awarded faculty. In addition to his teaching and creative work, he also serves as an Associate Provost Fellow.
