Sha Xin Wei obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford University with a dissertation on the phenomenology of differential geometric practice and the technologies of writing, as a joint project in Mathematics, Computer Science, and History and Philosophy of Science. He co-founded the Pliant sociotechnical research group, and the art research group Sponge in 1997. In 2001, he joined the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta as professor of critical studies of techno-science and media in the School of Literature, Communication and Culture. There Sha established the Topological Media Lab for the study of gesture and materiality from computational and phenomenological perspectives. After a year as Visiting Scholar in History of Science at Harvard University, and the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, in 2005 Sha accepted the Canada Research Chair in media arts and sciences at Concordia University in Montreal. His work has been recognized and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, LEF Foundation, Creative Work Fund, and the Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science, and Technology. Sha is an associate editor of AI & Society, and the Rodopi Press books series: Experimental Practices. He is currently writing a book about enchantment and poiesis in topological media.
