The study of sound at the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago is an essential component in
the education of its artists. Its interdisciplinary focus expands the
study of sound beyond Western European art music and encourages
experimentation in facilities of other areas, including programming
labs, electronic design and assembly labs, machine shops for wood and
metal work, sculptural practices, architecture and design. Sound
practitioners at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago explore:
composition; improvisation; radio/broadcast; the Web; phonography;
sonification; film and video; performance art; criticism and
analysis; and work across genres. Chicago's vibrant local music scene
supports improvised music, electronica, dance music, sonic art, indie
pop, contemporary classical music and performance art in hundreds of
venues, including clubs, galleries, outdoor venues and garages.
State-of-the-art facilities and resources include sound studios and
workstations; sensor development lab and vocal isolation booth;
Flaxman Library and Video Data Bank, with extensive collections of
recordings of experimental music and audio art; the Gene Siskel Film
Center; and more.
