Ellen K. Levy

Ellen K. Levy, a New York-based artist and teacher, is past president of the College Art Association (2004-2006). Levy has exhibited her work widely both in the US and abroad and is represented by Michael Steinberg Fine Arts. In 1985 Levy received an arts commission from NASA. She was a recipient of an AICA award (1995-1996) and was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of Arts and Sciences at Skidmore College in 1999, a position funded by the Luce Foundation.  Her work was included in the 2nd Moscow Biennale (2007), in “Weather Report: Art & Climate Change” at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, curated by Lucy Lippard (2007), and in a traveling exhibition developed by M. Kemp, C. Albano, and M. Wallace that originated at the Field Museum in Chicago. As guest editor with Berta Sichel of Art Journal’s, “Contemporary Art and the Genetic Code” (1996), she has subsequently participated in numerous exhibitions and symposia dealing with art and biotechnology. She has contributed chapters to Art et Biotechnologies, (Québec: Presses de l'Université du Québec, 2005), Art and Ethics (Allworth Press, 2006), and Context Providers (upcoming) and to CAA’s upcoming book, documenting the history of CAA. With Philip Galanter, she curated an exhibition about complex systems that originated at the Dorsky Museum of Art in 2002. She has taught at Brooklyn College, Cooper Union, and SVA, and has been a Visiting Artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at NYU while enrolled in Z-Node, a doctorate program affiliated with the University of Plymouth for artists involved with science and technology.
