Formatting Manuscripts
Formatting Guidelines for Authors
Please format your manuscript as follows:
- Do not center heads.
- Do not justify lines (use ragged right margin instead). Avoid extra spaces at the beginnings of lines.
- Do not hyphenate words at ends of lines, unless they are compound words that should be hyphenated wherever they fall.
- Do not use advanced formatting features intended to present the manuscript as it is to be published; minimally formatted text is more easily manipulated by editors and typesetters.
- Double space between paragraphs. Do not indent paragraphs.
- Do not use footnote or endnote formatting linking notes to note markers.
- Type subheads, titles and the like as isolated paragraphs.
Order of Elements in Articles
- Article Title
- Author Name
- Author's generic title (e.g. educator, artist), address
- Author address (postal and e-mail)

- Tables and Charts: Give clear instructions as to where each belongs in the manuscript. Any tables or charts requiring typesetting, if submitted on computer disk, should be supplied in separate files and with clear printouts.
Please see our sample articles and sample layout for guidance.
Special Characters
Please mark on the printed manuscript any accented characters, especially those requiring accents other than those standard in Western-European languages. Also identify non-Latin characters, math characters, and such.
If possible, please use the following convention for dashes:
--- (three hyphens) for an em-dash (a long dash indicating a break in thought).
-- (two hyphens) for an en-dash, used in ranges of numbers, as in "1898--1906"
- (one hyphen) for hyphens in compound words.
Submitting Manuscripts Electronically
Leonardo produces its issues via electronic publishing. We encourage authors to supply manuscripts to the editorial office on computer disk or via e-mail to greatly speed production. Please note the following guidelines:
Please supply files on standard 31/2-inch diskettes, zip disks or CD-ROMs.
PC compatible files are preferable, but Mac files are acceptable. Microsoft Word is the software of choice. If you are using another program save it as .rtf or .txt.
Name your manuscript file as follows: Yourname.doc (or Yourname.txt or Yourname.rtf if your manuscript is saved as a text file or rich text file, respectively). Name your image files as follows: Yourname_Fig1.tif, Yourname_Fig2.eps, etc.
We also accept email submissions. If you are sending your manuscript as an attachment, please follow the guidelines above for formatting your text. Please email all submissions to leonardomanuscripts@gmail.com
On the disk, please indicate the format in which you have saved the file. Be sure to keep another copy of your file for safety.
