SELECTION OF VISUAL MATERIAL

Refer to our Editorial and Illustration Guidelines for information on selecting visual material, numbering illustrations, writing figure captions and related topics.

GENERAL FORMATTING

Authors interested in submitting digital illustrations to the LEONARDO Editorial Office are encouraged to do so after referring to the following instructions. Adherence to these instructions will maximize the quality of the reproductions accompanying your article should you decide to submit digital illustrations. We prefer to receive images on disk or CD -- We ask that you do not submit image files via e-mail unless advised to do so by a staff editor.

Please indicate on the outside of the disk the system/platform of origin (e.g. Mac or PC) and the program name with program version (e.g. Photoshop 6.0) in which the art was originally created, as well as the author's name and the number of images included on the disk.

Art files should be named so as to indicate author's name, figure number and file format, e.g. JonesFig1.tiff.

Please provide a READ ME file describing art files, programs, necessary details, along with a directory printout showing file names.

PLEASE NOTE: If you supply digital image files, it is very important that you also supply high-quality printouts or slides for reference. This is particularly critical for color works that may appear in the color plate section. Monitors vary significantly, and an image printed on paper can look quite different from the same image viewed on a monitor. Sometimes artists rely on the on-screen appearance of their images and are surprised regarding how their works appear in print. Back-up slides or printouts that you provide should show the color and brightness as you want them to appear in print. Our layout people will aim to match the reference print or slide, and you will also have a better idea of how the work will appear on paper. Please note that color images must be saved in CMYK color mode with all levels adjusted.

DISK FORMATS

The typesetters can accept 100-MB Zip disks and CD-ROM disks. Images must be saved individually as uncompressed TIFF or EPS files, the choice of format depending on whether the image is continuous tone (e.g. photograph [appropriate for TIFFs]) or line art (e.g. a drawing without gradation of tones [appropriate for EPS files]). Color images must be saved in CMYK color mode. GIF images and images saved within word processing documents are not acceptable.

CONTINUOUS TONE ART

Each figure should be saved in an individual file named with the author's name and figure number (e.g. JonesFig1.TIFF). All continuous tone images (e.g. photographs) should be saved as TIFF files, at a resolution of 266 pixels per inch at the final repro size of 42 picas wide (approx. 7 inches). Screen shots (screen grabs) are automatically 72 pixels per inch, which is low resolution and will not reproduce the best. Please also note that artwork created or scanned at a lower resolution cannot be improved by re-saving it at a higher resolution. The scanning of images of halftones (i.e. from books or other printed matter) results in images that do not reproduce well, since moiré patterns are likely to result. Artwork in LEONARDO is screened at 133 lines per inch (pre-screened hardcopy artwork will be reproduced at the resolution in which it is presented to us).

Check all your levels! Please note: Be sure you have adjusted the contrast and other levels of your images before submitting the disks. Digital images will be reproduced without adjustment. Color images will be reproduced without adjusting levels. Please be aware that your images may appear differently to you on-screen or through your printer than they will in final reproduction. For images to be published in black and white, you should save the digital files in black and white, taking care that contrast and brightness levels are properly adjusted. If you are not certain whether an image will appear in black and white or in color, provide two versions of the image with levels adjusted appropriately. Color images saved as black and white images can become quite flat, so adjust contrast and brightness levels as needed for black and white versions. It's best if you can supply everything to us the way you wish it to appear in print.

LINE ART

Each figure should be saved in an individual file named with the author's name and figure number (e.g. JonesFig2.EPS). All line art files should be saved as EPS files. If fonts are used in art files, please supply a duplicate file of the art without labels, along with a hardcopy of the file with labels in place. Line art should be scanned at 600 pixels per inch or better (1200 pixels per inch is preferred). Hardcopy images should be printed out at a minimum of 600 dpi.

EQUATIONS

If equations are created in a separate equation editor and supplied as artwork, supply the equations in both EPS and PICT. Include the PICT preview with EPS if possible. Denote all equations files with the author's name and the equation number. Include only one equation per file. Please provide system/platform of origin and the program version in which the original art was first created.
