NEXT NYC LASER: 17 SEPTEMBER 2013

The next NYC Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous (LASER) will take place on 17 September 2013, 6:30 PM, at LevyArts, New York City. The event will include a feature presentation by Martina Mrongovius, an assistant professor of holography and light-art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Köln, and project director at the Center for the Holographic Arts, New York. She will discuss Interference:Coexistence, an exhibition of holography currently on view at the Queens Clocktower (NYC). Mrongovius will be followed by brief presentations by Anthony Heath, an optical engineer at Zebra Imaging who holds patents for innovative technology in the field of 3D holograms; Dr. Kenneth A Cuiffreda, Professor of Vision Sciences at the State University of NY College of Optometry, who will discuss how our eyes—and brain—see; and Adrienne Klein, who will discuss Graphic Alert, an exhibition of AIDS posters from around the world curated by Klein and now on view at NYU Langone Medical Center’s gallery (NYC). Join us for the next DASER on Thursday, 19 September 2013, 6 PM at the Keck Center, Washington, D.C. Speakers include director of the American Meterological Society Education Program Jim Brey, neuroscientist and neurothicist Jim Giordano, assistant professor of entomology and biology David Hughes and artist and professor of art Judith Waller. Special NYC LASER: 24 September 2013

A special NYC LASER will take place Tuesday, 24 September 2013, 6:30-8:30 PM at LevyArts to discuss SPLICE: At the Intersection of Art and Medicine, a traveling exhibition curated by Nina Czegledy at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery (19 September–9 November 2013) that aims to investigate changing corporeal perceptions influenced by scientific, social, political and cultural interpretations. To reach this goal SPLICE presents a scientific gaze of the human body by showcasing historic anatomical art as both complemented and challenged by international contemporary artworks. Discussants will include Jack Butler, Toronto Canada; Joyce Cutler Shaw, San Diego, US and Nina Czegledy, Toronto, SPLICE project curator. This event is free and open to the public. LEONARDO JUST ACCEPTED

On 25–26 June 2012, in the framework of the European StudioLab project, Leonardo/Olats co-organized with IMéRA in Marseille, France, the workshop "Water Is in the Air." A selection of eight papers from the workshop, plus an introduction by Annick Bureaud and Roger Malina, two of the workshop coordinators, has just been posted on the Leonardo Just Accepted page of the MIT Press website. LIQUID ARCHITECTURE 14: SONIC CITY, MELBOURNE

Liquid Architecture, part of the 14th National Festival of Sound Art, is a sense-specific festival that celebrates the diverse methods of sound-making and sound theory. It offers a range of events including concerts, immersive sound presentations, audio-visual and recorded work, exhibitions and installations. Liquid Architecture 14: Sonic City will explore how sound art and related art practices can respond to the protean and transformative nature of cities. The festival will take place in Melbourne, Australia, from 29 August to 14 September 2013 and will be accompanied by a national touring performance program. Find out more

EXHIBITION OPENING: INTERFERENCE:COEXISTENCE

Interference:Coexistence is an exhibition of holograms by 23 international artists. The hologram is an imprinted interference pattern of laser light. Holograms make us question perception; what we see occupies a space unlike that of a physical object. The holograms in this exhibition include classic work from the late 70s and early 80s that defined the art form, as well as fresh visions by established and emerging artists. The exhibition will run 4–28 September 2013 at Queens Clocktower in Queens, New York City. Find out more

2013 ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL, 5–9 SEPTEMBER 2013

“Total Recall: The Evolution of Memory” will be the theme of the next Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria, 5–9 September 2013. What is remembrance? How is information saved to memory and how is it lost? Neuroscientists and computer engineers, artists and philosophers will discuss memory and its storage—one of science’s most coveted secrets and one of humankind’s greatest technological challenges. The festival’s schedule features the Big Concert Night, a night of orchestral music and digital sounds, live electronics and visualizations staged by Ars Electronica, the Brucknerhaus Linz and the Bruckner Orchester. Ars Electronica has also debuted a new exhibition called Project Genesis, focused on the topic of synthetic biology. Find out more

GRAPHIC ALERT: AIDS POSTERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

The Medical Science Building (MSB) Gallery of NYU Langone Medical Center presents an exhibition of posters from 24 countries that illustrate the variety found in graphics from across the globe designed to educate the public about AIDS and its prevention. The posters, which range from beautiful to humorous to harrowing, reveal that the single unifying concern—the prevention of HIV infection—encompasses a variety of issues. The exhibition images were selected by LEAF Chair Adrienne Klein. The exhibition runs from 1–30 September 2013. An opening reception will be held 10 September. Find out more

LIVING DATA: SCIENCE, ART & TALKS IN SYDNEY

Living Data is an independent program that researches and develops art from climate science with the aim of stirring action to build a sustainable future. For the 2013 Ultimo Science Festival, scientists, artists and designers are heading to Sydney, Australia, for a program of exhibitions, presentations and the forum, Data for Action: How we act on what we count, weigh and measure. CALL FOR PAPERS: INTEGRATION OF ARTS AND MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) invites researchers to submit papers describing how to integrate artistic initiatives into media technologies in order to produce prototypes leading to new products and services. The papers should describe new initiatives (ideas, processes and methods), concepts, applications, developments and implementations of different media technologies created by means of artistic processes. The top papers will be presented at the COST Arts and Media Technologies (CAT) Workshop in Zagreb, Croatia, 25–27 November 2013. Deadline to submit: 15 September 2013. Find out more

FRIDAY AFTERNOON LECTURES: BACK TO THE FUTURE OF NATLAB #2

Ivan Sutherland, inventor of Sketchpad, the first graphical user interface, will be speaking at the second series of the Baltan Laboratories’ Friday Afternoon Lectures. In his talk, “Computers Yet to Come,” Sutherland will share his perspectives on the essence of computing and computer programming. Sutherland will argue that our current mode of operation is based on outdated paradigms that originate from the time when computers just started to emerge. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: innOVATION GRANT AWARDS PROGRAM

The arts network Ovation has partnered with the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) and Americans for the Arts (AFTA) to introduce the second annual innOVATION Grant Awards Program. This year’s innOVATION grant awards will be made to schools that have developed model STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of integrating the arts into educational curriculum. Up to eight schools with exemplary STEAM programs will receive $10,000 awards. Elementary through high school–level schools within the United States, including charter and magnet schools, are eligible to apply. The open application process is now open.
