Scientific Delirium Madness Is about to Begin!

By Patricia Bentson

Six scientists and six artists are about to embark on the month-long Scientific Delirium Madness residential retreat starting 1 July 2014 in Woodside, CA. Thanks to Margot Knight, Executive Director of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program (DRAP), Leonardo/ISAST and DRAP have joined forces for this art/science residency for our first collaboration. The program is an exciting move for both of our organizations -- DRAP has presented artists’ residencies for 35 years; Leonardo has featured artists and scientists working together for nearly 50 years – so the collaboration is a great fit as an evolution of both programs. During the course of the residency, artists will work closely with scientists to explore the boundaries of art and science, and transform their own work. The group reflects an interesting mix of media and disciplines: Sasha Petrenko, Media Artis; Meredith Tromble, Media Artist; Donna Sternberg, Choreographer; Ari Frankel, Composer; Charlotte Jacobs, Writer; Pireeni Sundaralingam, Poet; Devavani Chatterjea, Biologist; Jim Crutchfield, Physicist; Curtis Frank, Chemical Engineer; Budi Prakosa, Industrial Engineer; Andreas Siagian, Bogor, Industrial Engineer; and Dawn Sumner, Geobiologist. (Artists' & Scientists' full bios.) Over the course of their July residency, the artists and scientists have been invited as contribute to this blog and share their experiences and insights about their time together. We’re looking forward to the result!
