If this were a Japanese Noh Drama
I would be standing on a cliff above a ravine
And I would tell her a story.
Maybe I’d warn her of the terrible thing that will happen today to a city at the other side of the world.
But I am no ghost.

I was still very much alive
On that particular summer day when a city was destroyed by the power of atomic fission.
That fission which had once been so beautiful to me.
I was in Stockholm that day, so I am no ghost.
At least not to her.
But to you, now, in this room,
I guess I am a ghost.
So I will tell you the story.

In all the years since my death
I return here again and again
To this sixth day of August, 1945.
Sometimes I am under a stadium in Chicago
For that very first chain reaction. .
And sometimes I am in a desert in New Mexico
As The Gadget detonates for the first time.
Sometimes, when I cannot stop myself,
I’m on an island looking up at a blinding light in the sky
As hell rains down around me.
But for now I am here
In this Secret City in the mountains.

I miss my Viennese accent, the German language,
My own body.
But in my current state of… “being” –
For lack of a better word –
My tongue and appearance seem to suit the occasion:
Your occasion.
This appeals to my sense of practicality
Yet somehow leaves me a little sad.

I went where I had to, during the war.
And then, of course, afterwards,
I was invited everywhere.
They said I smuggled the bomb out of Germany
In a suitcase.
Ridiculous.
The narrative of history is a slippery thing.

Maya Spasova, London, UK. Visual Artist observed the centiSperm project and then took to drawing or channeling the lives of the centiSperm. Some are intertwined with each other. Some have wings. Some are forming into embryos. Some are flying in the sky. Derived from direct experience and delving into the unconscious connections to such a symbolic hybridity, Maya mixed snakes and angels, embryos and insects, clouds and DNA. Along with all the other prolific artistry Maya unleashed at Djerassi, she made 100+ centiSperm symbolically influenced drawings and embryonic sculptures.

Flight of the centiSperm

So David Bowen came up with this idea of using the centiSperm as a data set for flying his drone. He and Asa Calow shit talked some tech and David built a rotating four well conductivity meter dubbed the Jizalizer 3030.

centiSPerm (Human sperm combined with DNA from a centipede) was used as a data set. Relative electrical flow was measured over time from the centiSperm producing data as the cells containing it decayed. This data was scaled and correlated to Latitude, Longitude and Altitude respectively. The XYZ/time data plot is neither devoid of the potentially legible nor is it easy to find meaning in. However, a fabulous graphic plotting of the loci was produced and it a find piece of the Jizalizer 3010 centiSperm continuum.

The coordinates were uploaded to the drone and it flew autonomously based on the DNA instructions. Weidong Yang took a fabulous time-lapse photograph of the flight at night. The LEDs left a trail of four-dimensional semidata in the sky.

The use of a drone for data point plotting made for some complex readings. As you can see there are distinct coordinates of chaos on the stability locus of the flight path. The pauses and directional flavor of the Flight of the centiSperm led to group quizzical guesses as to what the 4D trail might imply.

Twitter rain at Djerassi SDM

Twitter rain installation was created at the old barn during the Djerassi open house day on July 24th, 2016. The installation is part of a series of preliminary experiments, with the goal of translating data into sensory experiences.

All election related tweets on July 19th were collected and used as data point for the installation. We identified top 9 hashtags of that day, assigned each hashtag to a IV drip station. We then played back tweets as water drops from those IV drips.

July 19 is the second day of RNC conference. Not surprisingly, tweets were dominated by republican party. Here are the top 9 hashtags used for the installation by tweet counts:

Among top 9, #imwithher sits at No. 7, represents 6% of total tweets (with #tcot removed). Outside of top 9, #nevertrump comes in at #13 with 26239 tweets, #hillary at #15 with 20491 tweets. The rest of top 15 are all pro Trump.

It was expected that during RNC, tweetverse would be one-sided, but we were still shocked to see the extreme degree of unbalance. In the future blog, we will repeat the same analysis to see how much of this unbalance is due to RNC.

Tweet rain on July 19th has effectively become Trump rain. As part of the installation, We provided head mount umbrella for those who do not like the idea of getting wet by the Trump rain. Many found that to be an OK alternative for contemplating moving to the northern country.

At old barn there is no cell reception, no wifi, and no electricity. There was an old generator there but broke down promptly at the beginning of the open house day. Streaming live data was thus not possible. So 1 day’s data was saved to each Arduino and played back in 2 hours. Each IV drip station has an IV bag, Ardruino, electric valve, and battery pack. The Arduino controls a valve to create water droplets. About 10GB of tweet data is being collected per day and saved on Amazon S3.

The installation explores the alternative to data visualization, data physicalization. By mapping data to physical objects, it creates new possibility of gaining insights through physical intuition. This installation is part of on-going exploration of engaging our sensory experience for data insights.

Kinetech Arts dance performance

During the open house, Daiane Lopes da Silva (Artistic director of Kinetech Arts) worked with dancers Amelia, Raquel, Neta and Kirill created an on-site dance performance. The dance investigated the physical environment at the old barn as well as the data associated with the installation, instigated the sensation associated with it, and explore the physicalization through movement.

We have since replaced Arduino with NodeMCU, an Arduino like device but is much smaller and has build in wifi. With this update we are able to stream live tweet data to the IV drip. We are looking for a suitable space to host this installation for the rest of election 2016. We hope to expand the installation to include more data that cover a greater duration of time, also  responds to live tweets.

Weidong Yang has a Ph.D in Physics, with dissertation on quantum dots. He founded Kinetech Arts, a dance and science collaborative in SF, and Kineviz, a data visualization service company. He is currently a resident scientist at Djerassi.

Kinetech Arts is a collective of artists and scientists creating performances that combine dance, performance, painting, sound and science with the newest interactive technology, to create unique and beautiful experiences. Jiayi Young is an experimental artist and designer. Her work concerns with the critique of popular culture,especially as it overlaps with media culture, consumer culture and culture of mass consumption. In addition to her M.F.A. in multimedia and painting, she has earned a M.S. in Atomic Physics. Jiayi Young is an assistant professor of Design at UC Davis.

Shih-Wen Young has a Ph.D. in High Energy Physics with dissertation on the physics of Charm quark and the decay of neutrinos. He is currently a professor of Astronomy and Physics at American River College, Sacramento. He has collaborated on Art Science projects with artists, musicians, dancers, technologists, and has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Daiane Lopes da Silva is a dancer, choreographer and the artistic director of Kinetech Arts. She studied with full scholarship at P.A.R.T.S., directed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Brussels. She graduated with a B.A. in Psychology, Alpha Beta Kappa, from SFSU. She was a resident artist at Marin Headlands Center for the Art in 2015.

Now that the centiSperm exists, we begin concern ourselves with artSci research and development. What can be done with this novel new media biotechnological product? Are there scientific theories, artistic practice, bioethical debates and profitable applications to stem from this?

My initial plan was to offer the centiSperm online as a posthuman artificial insemination product. I am sure there are people out there on the world wide media net web who would like a centiBaby. I haven’t had my sperm screened for safe resale and no one locally wanted to commit to a long-shot mutant interspecies jazz insect child.

I began to anoint one of Celia Olsen’s homemade donuts with centiSperm. Actually I have glazed that donut once or twice a day for the past five days. This a perhaps a boutique edible for a dedicated foodie. Perhaps Tim Hortons might be interested in licensing centiSperm glazed donuts?

 I did build a ceramic sculpture to honor Uranus’ castrated penis. I will fire it tonight and glaze the penis with centiSperm as a physical ceramic glaze. This should adorn the sculpture with a burnt offering and test the applicability of centiSperm as a second level of anointed glaze.

Novel Birth Control: centiSpermicide

I am a bit worried that I am incubating more than insect-human hybrid germ cells. The centiSperm glazed donut could be a petri dish for naturally found airborne pathogens that feed on sperm. Although the statistical risk factor is low, anytime you feed human cells you should be aware of what or who might grow on the rich lawn of easy to scavenge tissue. On the other hand, we may be hunting for a volunteer novel spermicidal agent that could be use as a additional spermicide in our arsenal against unwanted pregnancy. centiSperm as a medium can be used to bait and check novel organisms. Any microbial or fungal life that can grow on a centiSperm Glazed Donut incubator will be potentially resistant to centipede venom. This means that we may be able to derive a new spermicidal secondary metabolite from the microorganisms that can be used in conjunction with various forms of centipede venom therapies without deleterious drug interactions.
